Ezekiel’s vision in the first chapter of his book about the four living creatures and the wheels has caught my attention, especially about the wheels. It’s a very mysterious vision and an odd thing to even ponder on, but stick with me. Though this a certainly a vision of the mysteries that appear around the throne of God in heaven, it is speaking to me on a different level.
“As I looked at the living creatures, behold, a wheel was on the earth beside each living creature with its four faces…The appearance of their workings was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel” (Ezekiel 1:15-16).
Quickly, let me bullet point some things about these wheels:
I did a cursory look at theologians’ commentaries, but I’m not interested in that today. In my spirit, God is saying this is a picture of what harmony looks like in Heaven. It is what Jesus was referring to when He prayed at His last meal with His disciples: “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in you; that they also may be one in Us” (John 17:21). This passage in Ezekiel pictures what it’s like to be perfectly “in Christ,” a wheel within "The Wheel."
When we are perfectly “in Him,” there’s no struggle in knowing what to do or which direction to go in. We’re in The Wheel, and where He goes, we go. There’s no turning aside; we’re in The Wheel. We see because there’s revelation in The Wheel. His Spirit is in the wheels. As we move in this perfect harmony “in Him,” we (the church) produce a “thunderous” sound “like the noise of an army” (Ezek. 1:24) and a fire “of the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord” (1:28).
Though it sounds unobtainable, it makes me hungry to reach for it. I want to be so in harmony with Heaven, with my Triune God, that the effort and struggle of my flesh is no longer an issue. I’m just a wheel within The Wheel. In that position, it’s impossible to be outside His will.
I believe the Church needs to attain this level of harmony in order to be victorious in these last days. And I believe that if we pray for it, Heaven will come to Earth and help us. Let’s pray not just for a greater harmony between ourselves and God and a greater harmony within the Church, but that the Church will get to the place that we work in concert with the heavenly hosts Ezekiel saw. We’re going to need them!

- “they did not turn aside when they went” (1:17) “but followed in the direction the head was facing” (10:11)
- “their rims were full of eyes” (1:18)
- “wherever the spirit wanted to go, they went” (1:20), whether it was north, south, east or west, being lifted up or standing still
- “for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels” (1:21)
- The wheels made a “thunderous noise” (3:13).
- There is fire in the wheels (10:2, 6)
